Why Would Anyone Do That?
I just heard on the radio. Someone remade Baby Got Back by Sir Mixalot. Why would you do that? I mean, I'm about as fond of the song as anyone could be, since it was the first song played at my high school homecoming every single year. But why in Heaven's name would you want to remake the song? It wasn't that good to begin with. It's like reshooting Star Wars: The Phantom Menace without rewriting the script.

I think the music world operates on its own weird rules. Remakes are... I think they'd be considered an application of the phrase, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." *Shrug*

Why would you even want to flatter Sir Mixalot? While pretty much everybody's got kind of a soft spot for the guy, doing this is just visiting injury on the world. *grin*

I was highly disturbed to hear that remake as well. I don't know the reason for the existence of half of the remakes that have been made aside from "I was bored and had the money and the time."
Some remakes are good though. Look at Moulin Rogue. The whole thing is nothing but bits and pieces of songs remade and thrown into a musical where appropriate.

That's certainly true. I don't have anything in particular against remakes, I've heard some highly excellent ones, like Orgy's cover of "You Spin Me Round." It's only some of them that are terrible or nonsensical. The recent remake of "Come On Eileen" comes to mind.
